Jacksonville stretches along the northeastern Florida coast, where the St. Johns River meets the Atlantic and urban neighborhoods give way to beaches and wetlands. Downtown landmarks include the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, Riverside and Avondale’s historic streets, and the Riverwalk overlooking the water. San Marco adds another collection of independent restaurants and boutiques, while the beaches of Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach offer a more relaxed coastal setting. The city’s extensive park system also makes it easy to find trails, waterways, and quiet green spaces within the metropolitan area.

With its broad road network and location in northern Florida, Jacksonville is well suited to exploring the surrounding region by car. Amelia Island lies just to the north, with the historic town of Fernandina Beach and long stretches of Atlantic shoreline. Heading south brings you toward St. Augustine, whose Spanish colonial architecture and historic fort provide a contrast to Jacksonville’s modern character. Outdoor excursions can include kayaking through the waterways of Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve or exploring the forests and springs farther inland. Savannah, Georgia, is also within reach for a longer coastal road trip.
