      Santo Domingo

What to do in Santo Domingo:

Santo Domingo is the historic and cultural heart of the Dominican Republic, where centuries-old architecture sits alongside a busy Caribbean capital. The Colonial Zone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the city’s most distinctive area, with landmarks including the Catedral Primada de América, Alcázar de Colón, and Parque Colón set among narrow streets and restored buildings. Along the Malecón, the Caribbean Sea provides a dramatic backdrop to restaurants, nightlife, and evening walks. Local cuisine reflects the island’s Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences, with dishes such as mangú, sancocho, and la bandera appearing throughout the city.

Las Américas International Airport lies east of central Santo Domingo, making the capital a useful starting point for exploring the surrounding region by car. Boca Chica is close by and known for its shallow turquoise waters, while Juan Dolio offers a quieter coastal atmosphere farther east. Inland routes lead toward Los Tres Ojos and the rugged scenery of the Dominican countryside. Longer excursions can reach Bayahibe and La Romana, with access to beaches and island trips, or head west toward San Pedro de Macorís and other towns along the southern coast.
