Girona offers a more intimate introduction to Catalonia, with a beautifully preserved old quarter rising above the Onyar River. Medieval walls surround much of the historic center, where narrow stone streets lead to the imposing Girona Cathedral, the atmospheric Jewish Quarter, and small squares lined with cafés. The colorful houses along the riverfront create one of the city's most recognizable views, while the city's restaurants showcase Catalan cooking through dishes featuring local produce, seafood, cured meats, and regional wines.

Girona's location makes it especially well suited to exploring northeastern Spain by car. The Costa Brava begins nearby, with rocky coves, sandy beaches, and fishing villages stretching along the Mediterranean coast. Cadaqués and the Cap de Creus peninsula offer particularly dramatic scenery, while Figueres is home to the Dalí Theatre-Museum. Inland, the countryside is dotted with medieval villages, vineyards, and farmhouses, providing a quieter alternative to the coast. Barcelona is also within easy reach, making Girona a useful starting point for a wider Catalan road trip that combines historic towns, beaches, and mountain landscapes.
