Tallahassee offers a different side of Florida, surrounded by rolling hills, pine forests, and historic neighborhoods rather than the state’s better-known coastal scenery. As Florida’s capital, the city is home to the State Capitol, the historic Old Capitol, and the Museum of Florida History, while the nearby campuses of Florida State University and Florida A&M University contribute a lively student atmosphere. Cascades Park provides trails, gardens, and open spaces close to downtown, and the city’s tree-lined streets are particularly attractive in the spring when azaleas and other flowers are in bloom.

The surrounding Big Bend region is well suited to exploration by car. Wakulla Springs lies south of the city, with clear freshwater springs, forest trails, and abundant wildlife, while Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park combines formal gardens with wooded walking paths. A drive toward the Gulf Coast opens up quieter communities and natural areas around Apalachee Bay, including St. Marks and the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Further east, the historic town of Monticello and the rolling countryside of North Florida provide a slower-paced contrast to Tallahassee’s government and university districts.
