Ontario lies in Southern California's Inland Empire, offering easy access to both the region's urban attractions and the mountains beyond. The city has a relaxed suburban character, with Ontario Mills providing extensive shopping and nearby attractions including the Toyota Arena. Its location at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains means outdoor scenery is never far away, while the surrounding Inland Empire is home to wineries, historic communities, and a growing selection of restaurants. The area's warm, dry climate also makes it a comfortable base for exploring Southern California throughout much of the year.

A rental car opens up several different directions from Ontario. The mountain communities of Mount Baldy and Big Bear Lake provide cooler temperatures, hiking, skiing, and forest scenery, while Los Angeles lies to the west for museums, entertainment, and beaches. Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley can be reached by driving east through the desert, offering resorts, golf, and striking mountain landscapes. Closer to home, Rancho Cucamonga and Claremont have walkable districts, cafés, parks, and access to the foothills. Ontario's position between the coast, desert, and mountains makes it a useful starting point for exploring Southern California.
