Sacramento

What to do in Sacramento:

Sacramento blends California’s Gold Rush history with the relaxed character of a modern river city. Old Sacramento Waterfront preserves wooden storefronts, historic buildings, and cobbled streets along the Sacramento River, while the California State Capitol and surrounding parks occupy the heart of downtown. Midtown brings a different atmosphere, with independent restaurants, breweries, galleries, and colorful murals spread among tree-lined streets. The city is also known for its farm-to-fork dining culture, supported by the fertile agricultural region surrounding the capital.

Sacramento’s inland location puts a wide variety of California landscapes within driving distance. The Sierra Nevada begins to rise east of the city, with Lake Tahoe offering year-round opportunities for hiking, boating, skiing, and mountain recreation. Wine country is another easy excursion, with vineyards in Napa and Sonoma to the southwest and the lesser-known wineries of Amador County to the east. Davis and Woodland provide smaller-town alternatives nearby, while San Francisco can be reached for a longer day trip. Sacramento works well as a starting point for exploring Northern California beyond the major coastal cities.
