Saint Thomas combines steep green hills, sheltered bays, and Caribbean beaches with a lively waterfront and a distinctly historic atmosphere. Charlotte Amalie is the island’s main town, known for its Danish colonial architecture, narrow streets, historic buildings, and waterfront shopping. Climb the 99 Steps for views across the harbor, visit Blackbeard’s Castle, or head toward Mountain Top for sweeping panoramas over the surrounding islands. Magens Bay is one of the island’s best-known beaches, while smaller coves around the coastline offer quieter places to swim and snorkel.

A rental car makes it easier to explore Saint Thomas beyond the main tourist areas, although the island’s winding roads and steep hills make the journey part of the experience. Coral World Ocean Park and Coki Point are popular stops on the eastern side, while Red Hook provides access to ferries serving nearby Saint John. The island is also an excellent base for exploring the wider U.S. Virgin Islands, with boat connections and excursions to St. John and St. Croix. Scenic overlooks, hidden beaches, and hillside communities give each drive a different view of the Caribbean landscape.
