What to do in Avignon:
Avignon is a city and a commune in France on the Rhône River. It was the capital of the papacy from 1309 to 1377. Avignon is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995 and was the European cultural capital in 2000. The city is recognized for its architectural beauty and historic importance. Aside from the bridge and palace, other protected sites include the ramparts or protective walls leading up to the bridge and the Avignon Cathedral. Avignon has many cultural events happening throughout the year but the most famous one is the Festival d'Avignon, or Avignon Festival, which is an annual arts festival held in the French city of Avignon every summer in July.
