Kihei stretches along Maui’s sunny southwestern coast, with a series of beaches facing the islands of Kahoʻolawe and Molokini. The town has a laid-back, residential feel, with casual restaurants, local shops, beachfront parks, and a string of sandy coves connected by South Kihei Road. Kamaʻole Beach Parks are among the most popular places to swim, snorkel, and watch the sunset, while the offshore waters attract sea turtles and, during winter, migrating humpback whales. Early mornings often bring calmer conditions for paddling and snorkeling.

Kihei is also well placed for exploring other parts of Maui. A short drive south reaches Wailea and Makena, where upscale resorts give way to undeveloped coastal scenery around ʻAhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve. Inland, the slopes of Haleakalā rise dramatically toward the summit, where sunrise views and volcanic terrain create a completely different environment. The scenic Road to Hāna begins on the island’s northeastern side, leading through rainforest, waterfalls, and small coastal communities. Kihei’s central position makes it a practical base for combining beach days with excursions across Maui.
